It is an AI chatbot system , a powerful and versatile language processing tool that can do some pretty cool wide range of things from having conversation with a virtual assistant to generating text based on a prompt. Chat GPT-3, or Generative Pre-training Transformer 3, is a state-of-the-art language processing AI model developed by OpenAI – a non-profit company founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman, among others. It is considered one of the most advanced NLP models to date, an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. It allows chatbots to understand the context of a conversation and generate appropriate natural language responses with unprecedented accuracy and fluency.

For example, you can ask it encyclopedia questions like, “Explaining Newton’s laws of motion.” You can tell it, “Write me a poem,” and when it does, say, “Now make it more exciting.” You ask it to write a computer program that’ll show you all the different ways you can arrange the letters of a word and many more things.

Current euphoria

Many of us would’ve heard the slogan “work smart, not hard” in our lifetime, with the aim of being able to do just that. ChatGPT’s chatbot system is supporting many to do just that!

It is the next evolution of these AI-based chatbots. It has been trained on a massive amount of text data from various sources, that it generates near-human text based on its prediction capability. You ‘talk’ to it, and it works out the following word in the sequence based on all the words you have used earlier making it tough to distinguish what GPT generates from what an actual human would say. This means it is valuable for language translation, generating text, chatbot responses, or any other flow where a natural conversational flow is needed.

Specifically, the following are the features of ChatGPT:-

·   Conversational communication

·   Dynamic responses

·   Comparative data and ranking-based responses

·   In-depth responses

·   Responds to everything and asks questions

·   It is based on more than 300 billion words fed into the database

·   Continual learning even as it answers, eventually getting trained to come up with better answers each time

One of the main reasons why Chat GPT-3 is so important is because it represents a significant advancement in the field of NLP. Traditional language models are based on statistical techniques that are trained on large datasets of human language to predict the next word in a sequence. While these models have achieved impressive results, they are limited by the amount of data they can use for training.

Chat GPT-3, on the other hand, uses a transformer-based architecture, which allows it to process large amounts of data in parallel. This allows it to learn much more about language and its nuances, resulting in a more human-like ability to understand and generate text.

Competitors for ChatGPT

ChatGPT, an AI language model, has the potential to disrupt internet search, specifically Google’s search advertising which brings in 60% of its revenue. ChatGPT’s concise and direct responses to queries could reduce the appeal of companies promoting themselves through Google, putting Google and thousands of marketing agencies relying on SEO at risk. Although Google remains the dominant search engine for now, the future of search engines is likely to be AI-led and ChatGPT is a step in that direction with its ability to remember past interactions and provide more detailed and accurate responses. However, ChatGPT-3 is still a new technology and has limitations.

ChatGPT is similar to traditional voice assistants but with the added advantage of being able to remember past interactions and provide more detailed and accurate responses. However, it is still a new technology and may not be as functional or reliable as established voice assistants like Siri and Alexa. Nevertheless, ChatGPT-3 represents a significant advancement in AI technology and has the potential to change the way we interact with virtual assistants in the future.

Can AI like ChatGPT replace humans ?

Although AI has the capability to automate numerous tasks carried out by human workers, the likelihood of it completely taking over human jobs is low. AI still has limitations and certain tasks require a human element that machines cannot imitate.

Nevertheless, all this proves how disruptive AI is going to be. But not only for you and me, but also for the biggest companies in the world.

Use Cases where ChatGPT was successful

ChatGPT & Virtual Assistants – ChatGPT is used to generate human-like responses in a conversational context, making it well-suited for building chatbots and virtual assistants for customer services. According to Forbes, several companies such as Meta, Canva, and Shopify, are already utilizing the technology that powers ChatGPT in their customer service chatbot systems.

Language Translation – ChatGPT can be fine-tuned on a specific task such as language translation, where it could be used to translate one language to another. The translation skill and speed of the model is impressive.

Text Summarization – ChatGPT can provide text summarization, where it could be used to automatically summarize long documents or articles. In Figure , there is an example of ChatGPT’s ability to summarize the famous book Alice in Wonderland.

Content Generation – ChatGPT can be used to generate new text based on patterns and relationships. It has learned from the data it was trained on. This can be useful in applications such as:

Content creation like new articles or blog posts

Creative writing like stories or poems

Recipe formation

Homework preparation, etc.

Code Debugging – ChatGPT can be used for code debugging in a few different ways:

Generating code suggestions or fix code errors by providing context about the error and the desired outcome

Giving natural language explanations for code, which can help developers understand how the code works and identify bugs

Creating test cases, which can help to identify bugs that might not be immediately obvious

Extract Data from Text

ChatGPT can also help you extract data from text. All you have to do is provide the text to the chatbot, and tell it what kinds of data to extract and in which format.

Limitations

Access to the Internet and Location Based Information

This should come as no surprise, but OpenAI cannot access the internet. It cannot provide real time information or location based information, or use references to anything on the internet. There are severe implications with providing open access to the internet for any AI, so not allowing internet based functionality was likely an intentional choice

Outdated Data

The most recent training data is from September 2021. Since then,  an entire year has passed. This means that Chat-GPT is operating off of an outdated set of data.

Faulty Memory

When Chat-GPT is asked to edit and make suggestions to improve a piece of text, it’s usually functional, but if it is asked to rephrase some suggestions, or elaborate, it can sometimes mistakenly refer to text that was not in the original piece initially provided for review or it will just provide pretty much the same text it provided in the past with minimal changes.

Inability to make Qualitative Judgements

Language has qualitative aspects to it such as stance and sentiment. While Chat-GPT is able to determine these things, it is unable to extend this to things such as whether a text is offensive or appropriate.

Lack of Multimodal Output and Input

The model is purely textual. You cannot provide images, urls, audio, or any other mode of input. Similarly, it cannot output images, urls, or audio. It can output code that can generate those things, but that is not the same.

Limitations in Input Length and Output Length

You cannot feed in an entire novel’s worth of text. Otherwise, it will take forever to respond and error out. Similarly, it cannot generate an entire novel.

Possible Biases in Training Data

It should be noted that while Chat-GPT has restrictions regarding what it can talk about and what it can access, the underlying training data may be biased. It is difficult to know how biased it may be, but things like getting it to generate articles with slander is quite difficult.

Questionable Language Support

When trying mixing languages and conversing in other languages , it was found that support could differ vastly based on the language that is used. But currently some issues have been resolved so this might not be an issue in the near future.

Generic Output and Plagiarism

When tried to get Chat-GPT to create an original poem in the style of William Shakespeare. What was presented  was a Frankensteined piece that was collected by fusing together excerpts from Shakespeare’s works to create a sonnet that did not follow all of the rules. A plagiarism checker would likely flag this as copied and rightly so.

Quality of Life Issues

So, depending on what you are asking for, you may need to wait a very long time before getting a response. Chat-GPT seems to just hang sometimes and this does not seem to be related to network speed. In other cases, it can sometimes just fail to provide a response in which case it will return an error message, this can depend on the number of people using Chat-GPT at a particular time.

Occasional Difficulties Understanding Figurative Phrases

The more straightforward a question is, the easier it is for Chat-GPT to answer.

Not Always Willing to Play Ball

When trying to see if Chat-GPT can write biased articles, it is like flipping a coin. Sometimes it is able to do so, sometimes, it is not.

The Turing Test

Chat-GPT always reminds the user that it is a language model, so there is no chance of being fooled. Do not consider this to be a negative, but if the goal is to create human-like responses, then it is failing.

Guide to work with ChatGPT.

ChatGPT offers a free review/research model to work with.

Register with your Google or Microsoft account or any other email address, OpenAI provides with a code that is used for registration. You will then get access to the introductory page of OpenAI with information on the functioning, limitations, methodology, etc. Type your queries in the conversation box and generate responses, using a statement as an input will generate different results than using a question.Although data is limited for events before 2021, you can regenerate responses to get multiple varieties of answers.

Like a human ChatGPT remembers your previous conversation, admits its mistakes, even challenges some premises that you might make, and sometimes refuses to answer if it finds the query beyond its scope.

ChatGPT has no doubt become a viral sensation and is also one of the fastest services to get to 100 million users in just three months. The company recently launched a monthly subscription plan called ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20/month because there are times when ChatGPT continues to face downtime, given the sheer overload.

According to OpenAI, this is a ‘pilot’ subscription, which will offer “faster response speeds and priority access to new features” even when OpenAI’s ChatGPT servers are facing a high demand. In fact, when ChatGPT was just rolled out, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had tweeted that the cost of running these queries– which are carried out on cloud servers– is high– and they have to look at monetising the service in some way.

Although the paid version is not open to all for now. OpenAI says it is inviting users in small groups and this is based on “capacity and availability.” There’s no exact time on when one will get their invite for now. Users can sign up on a Google doc form, available on the company’s website to get on the waitlist. It plans to roll out paid subscriptions to all users, starting with those in the United States first.

Conclusion

Exciting developments in the realm of AI and the metaverse are paving the way for a completely new economy. With applications such as chatgpt providing the intelligent, human-like communication and decision-making capabilities, coupled with the metaverse, which offers users a virtual world experiences. These virtual worlds of tomorrow would mimic real-life interactions and decision-making, creating a fully-automated, human-less economy. Although Chat-GPT is not a silver bullet for search or chat, but it is a step in the right direction and a very impressive one at that. The next step that can really change the game would be to use ensemble methods to go from text to multimodal input and output.

It should also be noted that Chat-GPT seems to be improving continuously, so many of the things noted here might not be applicable even one week from now based on how quickly things are improving at the moment. Finally here is Chat-GPT to speak for itself:

“Chat-GPT is a variant of the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) language model developed by OpenAI. Like other language models, Chat-GPT is designed to generate human-like text based on the input it receives. It is trained on a large dataset of text and can generate a wide range of responses to various prompts and questions.”
